ARL Frequently Asked Questions

What equipment do I need?

GPST races Giant Slalom (GS) primarily but some NASTAR Club races could be Slalom (SL) or Kombi.  If you have been out of the sport for 25 years or so, things have changed quite significantly FOR THE BETTER in terms of equipment. The skis are far more fun to turn, and it is far easier to carve. This is the case for GS but it is especially the case for Slalom.

SKIS/BINDINGS - Skis and bindings are generally purchased together.  Slalom skis for women are generally 155 cm, and for men are 165 cm.  GS skis range from 170 to 185 for women, and 175 to 195 for men.  If you are looking to race GS and SL, you can't get away skiing SL on GS skis or visa-versa; you'll want a pair for each event.  Although total retail for skis and bindings can be $1400+, there is no reason you need to pay this much. You can find prior year's skis at steep discounts every year.  GPST also holds a Ski Swap the first weekend of October every year and is a great place to find deals on both new and slightly used race gear! The most popular brands of skis these days are Atomic, Blizzard, Rossignol, Fischer, Head, and Nordica.

BOOTS - Boots have not changed much over the last 30 years or so other than becoming a bit less stiff forward and back, and more stiff laterally.  If you already have a great pair of well-fitting boots, there's no real reason you need to spend money on new boots right away.  We'd suggest spending that money on new skis first. Soft boots can always be made stiffer rather easily.  A common mistake those new to racing make is they buy an overly-stiff racing boot. This hinders your progress significantly.  You're far better off with comfortable boots, and as your skills improve, you can upgrade either by purchasing a new pair, or customizing your existing pair. It is also quite common to get custom foot beds and orthotics in your boots, and/or to have your shell and liner custom fit to your foot.  2 of our sponsors: Pierce Skate & Ski and Shepherd & Schaller can help you with this.  New boots, with full customization can cost you $1,000 or more for a current year boot. But you can stretch your dollar quite a bit by buying late year boots, or simply modifying your existing boots. The most popular brands of boots these days are Atomic, Rossignol, Fischer, Salomon, Head, Lange, and Nordica.

APPAREL - Most racers wear a GS suit for all events including SL, but not everyone does this.  Tighter-fitting clothing works just fine! Note that there is a difference between a Downhill (DH) suit and other suits. DH suits generally have no padding.  You will want to have some degree of padding in the suit for SL and GS.  Most all race shops sell GS suits!  They can range from a couple hundred dollars up to over $1,000 for the super fancy high-tech ones (which aren't at all needed!)  You can also find great deal on ebay or other online shops!

HELMETS -  Helmets are necessary equipment for anyone wishing to ski race with GPST.  Our sport is a dangerous one, and there's no reason to go without a helmet.
